Country-level Electoral coalitions in the Czech Republic
Snížek, Jan ; Stauber, Jakub (advisor) ; Brunclík, Miloš (referee)
The issue of coalitions is a traditional political science topic closely related to electoral systems, party systems and party theory. In the Czech and foreign literature, however, political scientists mostly deal only with coalitions that emerge after elections. That is why I have chosen for my diplo-m thesis the research of pre-election coalitions. In my thesis I conduct research on electoral coalitions that ran for the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic or the Czech National Council. I have chosen this topic also because in the last parliamentary elections in 2021 two electoral coalitions successfully ran for election and then formed a joint government. In this thesis, I deal with the Christian Democratic Union (KDU), ODS and KDS coalitions, the Left Bloc coalition, the Liberal Social Union, the Four Coalitions, SPOLU and the coalition of the Pirates and the Mayors. I have researched all these electoral coalitions and analysed their functioning, behaviour, ideological interconnectedness and post-election behaviour and action on the political scene. For this thesis I used academic literature, newspaper articles from the time of the coalitions' functioning, parliamentary press, proceedings in the Chamber of Deputies and Internet sources in the form of news about political events. I also...
Targeting and positioning in a presidential election campaign of Petr Pavel - young voters generation
Dejmková, Tereza ; Konrádová, Marcela (advisor) ; Shavit, Anna (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with targeting and positioning of the presidential election campaign of Petr Pavel and focuses mainly on addressing the youngest generation of voters, Generation Z. The 2023 presidential election was different in several ways, but one of them was, for example, the targeting of some candidates to Generation Z. The generation currently includes the majority of voters who participated in the presidential election for the first time, and who may also have followed it more closely for the first time. The aim of this thesis is therefore to find out to what extent the targeting and positioning of the campaign was adapted to Generation Z in the development of the strategy, and also to find out whether Petr Pavel was able to reach this target group through the campaign and through which steps he achieved this. The theoretical part of the thesis first describes and defines the tools of political marketing, characterizes Generation Z and the specifics of their voting behaviour. In the practical part of the thesis, the aforementioned tools of political marketing are applied to the campaign of Petr Pavel. The information for this part of the thesis was obtained from a personal interview with the marketing director of the Petr Pavel campaign, Martin Klčo, conducted by the author of the...
Geopolitical topics in Northern Ireland elections
Král, Josef ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Vrhel, Matěj (referee)
The main aim of this thesis is to analyse and interpret the electoral manifestos of several Northern Irish political parties, namely the Democratic Unionist Party, Traditional Unionist Voice, Ulster Unionist Party, Sinn Féin, Social Democratic and Labour Party, People Before Profit and Alliance, in terms of the projection of geopolitical and globally significant social events, namely Brexit and the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland, the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, into the electoral manifestos of the parties in question. The thesis uses a combination of critical discursive analysis and content analysis to process the given electoral programmes. In terms of timing, these are documents drawn up by the parties for the Northern Ireland Assembly elections in May 2022. The importance of each issue for the parties in question, the frequency with which the issues appear in the programmes and the way in which the parties deal with the issues in their programmes are examined. The parties' attitudes to the issues, or the existence of consensus or cleavages within the Northern Irish political scene, are also examined. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on the theory of cleavage lines. The thesis has identified the projection of the aforementioned events into electoral...
Christian parties in Switzerland, in Austria and in Germany - a comparison
TRAPL, Dominik
This bachelor's thesis deals with the three most important Christian parties, namely the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, including its sister Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU) operating in the territory of the Free State of Bavaria. Furthermore, Die Mitte in the Swiss Confederation, which was cre-ated on 1/1/2021 by the merger of the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP) and the Civic Democratic Party (BDP). Then the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) in the Republic of Austria. These are political parties that have a common basis in the Christian traditions to which they subscribe. Nevertheless, over the years there has been a permissive aban-donment of these traditions, which is particularly noticeable in the Austrian People's Par-ty, which already wants to be the party of all citizens of Austria, regardless of their reli-gion. In my theoretical part, I focused on the characteristics of Christian parties, including youth organizations. In the following practical part, I analyse the elections to the lower houses of the parliaments for the last 10 years, i.e. the electoral successes of the men-tioned Christian parties and their subsequent representation in the lower house between 2011 and 2021. Then I deal with the election programs of the Christian parties on the se-lected topics. So, my goal is to look for common aspects to certain social problems, but also different attitudes.
The effect of rainfall on voter turnout: Evidence from the Czech Republic
Kubíková, Kristina ; Palanský, Miroslav (advisor) ; Šťastná, Lenka (referee)
Existing research suggests that rainfall on election days has, at least under some circumstances, a significant negative effect on voter turnout. The purpose of this thesis is to assess whether this is also the case in the Czech Republic. The results support the hypothesis, with the preferred specification suggesting that one additional millimeter (mm) of precipitation on election day is associated with a drop in turnout rates of around 0.26 to 0.38 percentage points. We find that election type plays a key role in determining the effect of rainfall on voter's participation. For the elections to the Chamber of Deputies, we find evidence of an inverted U-shape relationship, consistent with the notion that small amounts of rain do not play a significant role in an important election, while heavy rain (around 6mm and more) decreases turnout with every additional mm of rain. For the elections to the European Parliament, which are generally perceived as less important, we find turnout to be negatively associated with even smaller amounts of rain: one additional mm of rain is associated with a 0.82 percentage point decrease in the turnout rate. Finally, we study the link between the closeness of the election results, precipitation, and turnout, and we find that for important elections, a close fight...
Comparative Analysis of Political Parties' Cooperation within Electoral Coalitions in the Czech Republic
Kutman, Ondřej ; Stauber, Jakub (advisor) ; Michal, Aleš (referee)
The bachelor's thesis maps electoral coalitions in the Czech republic on parliamentary and regional level. It unravels which parties are most common amongst these coalitions and clarifies their ideological position. This is based on the Party family theory, which is closely described in the theoretical part of this thesis. This part also includes an explanation for the concept of electoral coalitions. Methodology of this thesis is based on data published by the Czech Statistical Office. The practical section of the thesis uses this data to discover the frequency of occurence of political parties in electoral coalitions. Furthermore, this section clarifies the success rate of these coalitions. The results of the research helped to create two datasets where the parties are sorted by the frequency of occurence. The research led to a conclusion that the existence of electoral coalitions is not strongly affected by the ideological differences between the parties of the coalitions. Also, cooperation of centre-right parties with both liberal and conservative elements of political agenda is quite common amongst these coalitions.
Application of Paired comparison method in election research
Lišková, Kristýna ; Jeřábek, Hynek (advisor) ; Krejčí, Jindřich (referee)
Author of these thesis researches the ability Paired comparison method to predict the results in the presidential elections during January 2018 ( the first and the second round). The pair comparison method is based on the assessment of individual candidates in combinations (pairs) where two candidates stand against each other and there is a judge who compares them in all combinations. The author carried out an investigation using three standardized questionnaires. She has applied the method in the first questionnaire and surveyed the actual choice of the respondents in the other two questionnaires. There were 392 respondents who participated in the complete questionnaire surfy and their answers were analyzed and compared with their results of Paired comparison method. The thesis also shows the accuracy of the method and the suitability of the application, as well as the ability to predict the results of undecided voters. The Paired comparison method in prediction of the results of the first round, but was able to estimate the results of the second round. The author concludes that Paired comparison method should be used in several round types of elections or those where two candidates stand against each other. There are also examined the disadvantages and risks of the method.
